My Academic Success

My name is Kevin Neondo, and I completed my high school education in 2024. My journey at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School was truly transformative. I had never known about the school before, and like many others in my community, I had little hope of continuing to secondary school. However, a well-wisher told me about St. Aloysius Gonzaga, and I decided to try my luck. I met with the principal and shared my story, and she, filled with compassion, allowed me to enroll. This marked the beginning of an incredible chapter in my life.

My journey to scoring an A- in my KCSE exams was driven by a powerful desire: to become a doctor. This ambition wasn’t just about personal achievement; it was about transforming my family’s circumstances. I believed that education was, as they say, the key to success, and I wanted to provide them with a stable home.

The challenges I faced in high school were significant, primarily due to my upbringing in the Kibera slum. Growing up in an environment where exposure to drugs and immorality is common, I often encountered people who tried to discourage me, claiming that my dedication to school was pointless. However, I remained motivated, largely thanks to the incredible support system at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School.

As a Jesuit institution, St. Aloysius Gonzaga emphasized building “men and women for others.” This philosophy was evident in the school’s commitment to fostering holistic development. We actively participated in group discussions, which not only enhanced our understanding of the curriculum but also instilled in us the value of collaboration and community engagement. The school also provided a nurturing environment that supported our spiritual and physical growth. We participated in regular masses and prayers, which provided a sense of purpose and groundedness. Furthermore, the school ensured our physical well-being by providing two, and sometimes even three, meals a day, recognizing the importance of nutrition in academic success. Importantly, the school also provided mentorship and guidance, enabling me to choose the right subjects and excel in them by helping me navigate my career path.

After completing high school, I had the opportunity to participate in the school’s community service program. I am currently placed at Mirror of Hope CBO, where I am gaining valuable experience and learning how the world operates beyond the classroom. This service is not only preparing me for the corporate world but also allowing me to give back to the community that has supported me. At Mirror of Hope, I am utilizing the skills I acquired in school, particularly through the mentorship programs, to mentor young students. I am immensely grateful to St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School for providing me with a nurturing and transformative educational experience and for the opportunity to pay it forward.

The school’s commitment to holistic development, coupled with the unwavering support of the teachers and staff, played a pivotal role in my academic success. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the sponsors and well-wishers who have generously supported the school, making it possible for students like me to access quality education and build a brighter future. Your selflessness and dedication have had a profound impact on my life and the lives of many others.

Looking ahead, I am excited to pursue a degree in medicine. It is my dream to become a doctor and serve my community, particularly those who lack access to quality healthcare. I believe that the education I have received has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to make a meaningful contribution to society.

As a former student, I understand that St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School has an alumni mentorship program. I would like to propose that the school consider strengthening and expanding this program to connect past students with current students, providing even more comprehensive guidance, support, and inspiration. By enhancing the program, we can help current students navigate their academic journey, make informed decisions about their future, and foster an even stronger sense of community and belonging.

The education I have received at St. Aloysius Gonzaga has not only opened doors to higher learning but has also empowered me to become a responsible and compassionate citizen. I am committed to using my education to make a positive impact in the world, to uplift those around me, and to contribute to the betterment of society.
